Many centuries ago people practicing religion began to have very strong beliefs that possible the Devil could grant certain people the power to harm other people in exchange for their loyalty. These beliefs began a witchcraft craze throughout Europe from the 1300's to the 1600's. During this time hundreds of thousands of people that were supposed witches, mostly women, were executed. Then in 1689 a war was started in France by English rulers William and Mary. This war was started in the American colonies in areas of upstate New York, Quebec and Nova Scotia. This sent refugees into the Salem village of the Massachusetts Bay colony.
